Kitchen remodels are complex beasts that can be either rewarding or overwhelming, depending on your experience and knowledge set. If you are thinking about tackling the beast and taking a kitchen remodel into your own hands, avoid these 5 common pitfalls to make the process as stress-free as possible:
1. Ordering cheap cabinets
Not knowing the difference between particle board and plywood can make you think you are getting a killer deal on cabinets, until you start loading appliances into those deep drawers. Cheap cabinets are often constructed out of particle board which is much weaker than plywood and won't last the wear and tear of time.
2. Forgetting to double check clearances
OH GOD WILL THE REFRIGERATOR FIT? Is a thought you don't want to be thinking. It will fit if you check the installation guide and all the required clearances. We find that measuring the clearance at least 500 times allows us to sleep a little better when it's time for that sucker to be installed.
3. Installing lighting that isn't up to code
LED lighting is what the code requires, but be careful: popular retailers don’t always follow suite.
4. Mismanaging material scheduling
Time is money and you don't want your contractor wasting time waiting for materials. Knowing the lead times of all materials is crucial for a positive work flow, and sometimes you have to pull strings with the cabinet guys to get all of the materials in according to schedule.
5. Misunderstanding the layout
Mastery of the working triangle* alone does not make for a successful kitchen layout.
